A Mild November is Coming

Despite all the predictions of a cold Winter there looks to be a very mild November on the way this year with a bit of dry weather at times but other periods of rain. Temperatures will hit 14 or 15c a lot of the time which is quite unusual for the month of November.

Rainfall will be around or a bit below normal and the sunshine figures will just be around normal as it is rare to get a sunny November due to the shortness of the days.

Later on the Winter still looks like it will be very cold especially during the month of December but the mild weather in November will last all the way through the month as a predominantly Southerly airstream is over Ireland. This will be as a result of a High Pressure to the East of Ireland and a Low Pressure out in the Atlantic brushing the West and North Coasts at times

so there areas will of course be likely to see some rain at times and temperatures will be 13 or 14c here but on the plus side places like Galway Mayo Sligo and Donegal will see mild nights and temperatures not falling below 8c a lot of the time.

Why was Winter so Mild?

Just why was this Winter so mild in Ireland a lot of people are asking?

  • High Pressure Remained to the South bringing Southwesterlies
  • Low Pressure was much further North than 2010
  • Increased cloud cover at night due to moist airflow
  • Warm Sea Temperatures
  • Winds coming in from the Atlantic
  • Siberian Air just failing to reach our shores
  • Windy weather at times prevented frost
  • Lack of mobility at times meant prolonged mild spells
  • Lack of Cold Weather in Europe until February
Sunny days were rare this Winter in Ireland

Cool Weather in General

Although the weather in recent weeks has been very mild for the start of October both in Ireland and the UK, it is set to get cooler in the coming few weeks with a lot of rain and some wintry showers at times. Snow is not likely except on the highest peaks but it will be a good deal cooler.

What is the cause of this? Well for nearly all of 2011 the weather pattern has been coming from the Atlantic and in the last few months in particular it has been coming from the Northwest. This resulted in a very cool June and August.

Again we are looking at a continuation of this weather pattern in the coming few weeks with a lot of windy weather to go along with it so it will feel very seasonal though perhaps too early for any snow lovers to take out the skis.

Take it that temperatures are now going to be below normal or at average and rainfall will be above average especially along the already soaked Atlantic seaboard.

October Ends Windy and November??

Previously on weathergossip blog... "a lot of strong winds in October". It did not really materialize did it. But as is oft the case with the weather in October it ends with a storm in a sandwich just like it is today, October 28th.

Back to the weather the gales and wind that are around at present look like they will continue until the end of the month and some steady rainfall totals look like falling especially in Munster and Leinster. Upward of 50mm could fall between Friday and Sunday in some parts of the East and Southeast. The Western half of the country and Sligo look like escaping for a change.

Whatever will November bring after all of this wind and rain. Well at the moment a lot more of the same looks to be the answer. Is it too early to say if the weather is going to be stuck in a mild windy and wet pattern for the Winter? Maybe this is going to be the case but the is Low confidence that a blocker of a High will try to push in around November 10th and should this intensify we could get frosty nights similar to last Winter for a while.
