Warming up as we head into June but for how long?

The cold May weather should become a thing of the past in the coming days as we finally start to see some warmer than average conditions. How warm is a bit uncertain but surely 20c is on the cards for Ireland. The last day we had a temperature that high was April 1st!! Since we have had nearly 2 months of cold weather.

June will start off warm 18 to 22c but then get more thundery as we move into the month. As long as the thunder is from the South the weather will remain warm. After 2 months of cooling it needs to stay over us a long time for temperatures to respond. Its uncertain what happens after mid June at this stage.

Maybe we get dragged into a brief cooler regime before it heats up again at the end of the month.

Heavy Rain then dry again

There will be over 50mm of rain over the coming weekend especially in more Southerly and Eastern parts of Ireland.

Parts of the Northwest of Ireland have seen less than 5 percent of their normal rainfall for October.

However from the 20th to 24th October a dry period of weather is on the cards for Ireland before things turn unsettled for the end of the month.

Early indications suggest a cold November and December but not extremely cold before milder interludes are signalled for 2017

Though windstorms are not favored rainfall will be high sometimes due to blocking.

Weather for rest of May/June

The rest of May sees more normal weather for Ireland after a mini heatwave in the West when temperatures in Belmullet peaked at 25.4c. Overall the West has done much better than the East from this fine spell of weather with over 200% of the normal sunshine recorded here while over in the East there were a number of cloudy days and even some light rain at times.

All the way until the end of May now we are going to see the normal sun one day, shower another and rain the other type of weather. Temperatures will be around 16 or 17c most of the time but may get higher in long sunny spells and lower in showers.

June is looking like one of those thundery type months where everything is borderline. If the shower activity stays South there may be a number of dry days with warm sunshine mixed with the odd downpour but then again if there is more shower activity then the temperatures wont be a high. However as the weathergossip Summer forecast shows this year is going to be a lot warmer than previous Summers if not sunny.

Why was Winter so Mild?

Just why was this Winter so mild in Ireland a lot of people are asking?

  • High Pressure Remained to the South bringing Southwesterlies
  • Low Pressure was much further North than 2010
  • Increased cloud cover at night due to moist airflow
  • Warm Sea Temperatures
  • Winds coming in from the Atlantic
  • Siberian Air just failing to reach our shores
  • Windy weather at times prevented frost
  • Lack of mobility at times meant prolonged mild spells
  • Lack of Cold Weather in Europe until February
Sunny days were rare this Winter in Ireland

Bitterly Cold Weather on Way

Ireland is in for a bitterly cold spell of Arctic weather in the next 4 to 5 days. It all starts off on the night of December 16th and it looks like it is going to wreak havoc with people's travel plans over the Christmas period.

Thursday night sees heavy wintry showers of hail sleet and snow with some drifting in Donegal but this will become more widespread over Ulster and some parts of North Connaught too later on in the night.

On Friday the snow showers continue throughout the country perhaps turning to sleet as the real cold from the Low has yet to set in. Showers will be widespread on Friday evening though and this could bring a lot of snow to many parts of Ireland that will still be on the ground come Christmas due to freezing temperatures.

Saturday and Sunday will have further outbreaks of sleet and snow and though some Met Services are saying it wont be as bad as the cold spell we had at the beginning of the month it will probably bring more snow to some regions, just not the record Low temperatures... or will it?
